JVS, in partnership with AccelerateSF, is moving forward with a Vocational English as a Second Language class and that it is being offered to CCSF/BOSS clients! After identifying a high percentage of English language learners among the group of students who were referred to the BOSS program, we decided that a VESL class was an important component of effectively addressing the job search assistance needs of these clients.
This course is targeted at helping adults with intermediate-level English language skills to prepare for success in the workplace through listening and speaking practice aimed at identifying and demonstrating the qualities of an effective employee in the American workplace in relation to getting a job, keeping a job or getting a better job. The course participants will work individually, in pairs and as a group to brainstorm, role-play and participate in discussions. Participants will also practice typical job interview scenarios and workplace communications related to problem-solving and negotiation. The course is not intended to duplicate existing CCSF or JVS job preparation or ESL classes, but to give Intermediate learners additional practice and confidence as they enter in job search. Assessment will be based on the participant’s ability to successfully communicate in role-play situations. Participants achieving a passing grade will receive a Certificate of Completion for the course. Participants will also be pre- and post-tested using CASAS assessments.
Please find attached the informational flyer and class information/FAQs sheet. Feel free to distribute this information to your intermediate ESL students – even if they are not enrolled in a CCSF certificate program or as a BOSS client. This class has limited capacity (maximum 25 students) but we are actively outreaching to the community; it is open to anyone who may find it helpful and who meets the enrollment requirements.
VESL class outreach basics:
ü Please think of students who could benefit from this course, their level of job readiness and ability to participate.
ü Target audience/enrollment guidelines: Intermediate level English speakers ages 18 and older who are job ready, actively engaged in a job search and can commit to attend all 10 weeks of class. Participants must be looking for work now or within 3 months, authorized to work in the U.S. and willing to report back when they get a job.
ü There will be a skills assessment at the orientation sessions to ensure the right students are in the class. Students must attend an orientation in order to enroll.
ü Childcare and transportation help may be available: sign up at orientation session.
